Teddy Bear Puppies for Sale in New York

Families looking at Teddy Bear puppies for sale in New York usually want the same few things, a small dog that fits a smaller home, a coat that does not leave hair on everything, and a temperament that stays steady around kids and visitors. The Teddy Bear is a Shih Tzu crossed with a Bichon Frise, and it lands right in that spot. Ours grow to about 9 to 12 inches and 8 to 15 pounds, with the round face and plush wavy coat the name comes from.

We raise our puppies in east-central Ohio, roughly five hours from Buffalo and nine to ten from New York City. That puts the whole state inside easy reach of our climate-controlled van, and most New York deliveries arrive the day after the puppy leaves the kennel.

Teddy Bear Puppy Delivery to New York

There are three ways to get your puppy home, and we talk through them by phone once a puppy is reserved rather than making you pick at checkout.

Home delivery by van. This is what most New York families choose. A professional pet transport service drives the puppy door to door in a custom climate-controlled van, with an individual carrier, a vet check before the trip, and updates along the way. The fee to New York is currently $350, flat anywhere in the state. Ground runs leave on Tuesday mornings, and because New York sits on the shorter end of our routes, most deliveries are next-day. Plan on having your puppy within about three days of scheduling the trip.

Flight nanny. A trained handler carries the puppy in the cabin of a commercial flight, never in cargo, and hands them to you at baggage claim. Most of these are done same day. Common arrival points for New York families are John F. Kennedy International, LaGuardia, Buffalo Niagara International, Greater Rochester International, Syracuse Hancock International, Albany International, and Westchester County Airport. Pricing is quoted per flight and runs higher than the van. Teddy Bears clear the airline size rule without any trouble since a puppy at go-home weighs only a few pounds against a 20 pound limit including the carrier. Worth knowing, some airlines put restrictions on short-muzzled dogs flying in cargo, and the Teddy Bear does have a slightly shortened muzzle from the Shih Tzu side. Since our nannies keep the puppy in the cabin the whole way, that rule never comes into play. Upstate winter weather can push a flight, so we ask for a little flexibility on dates from November through March.

Pickup at the Ohio farm. You are welcome to come get your puppy in person at our Fresno, Ohio kennel by appointment. From Buffalo, Rochester, Jamestown, or the Southern Tier this is a manageable drive, around five to six hours, and a good number of western New York families make a day of it. You meet the mother, tour the kennel, and go through the vaccine records, microchip registration, and health guarantee with us before you leave. We send you off with a bag of the food the puppy is already eating and a blanket carrying the mother's scent.

Our recommendation for New York. If you are west of Syracuse and do not mind a drive, pickup is worth considering for the visit alone. For everyone else, and especially for families downstate, on Long Island, or in the Hudson Valley, home delivery at $350 is the better value. It skips the airport entirely and usually gets your puppy to your door the day after departure.

Teddy Bear Puppy Breeder Serving New York Families

The Puppy Lodge is a family business run by the Nisley family on five acres in the rolling hills of east-central Ohio. We have been raising dogs for more than 13 years. Our adult dogs all belong to us and have been genetically tested and picked for temperament, health, pedigree, and color genetics. Litters are raised across a closed network of local kennels near the farm by breeders who work only with our dogs and follow our health testing and breeding standards, which is how we keep quality consistent while raising more than one breed well.

With Teddy Bears in particular, two things get extra attention. The first is early handling. Every puppy goes through the ENS protocol from day three through day sixteen, then spends its remaining weeks being carried around and played with by our children. That matters more in this breed than most, because Teddy Bears bond hard and can develop separation anxiety if alone time is not built in early. Early stress tolerance gives you a head start on that work, though the crate training and gradual practice still fall to you at home. The second is health screening. Both parent breeds carry known risks, patellar luxation and dental crowding from the Shih Tzu side, allergies from the Bichon side, and eye conditions from both, so every parent dog is genetically tested and health screened before we make a pairing. Our vet from Danville Veterinary Clinic comes to the kennel weekly and examines each litter multiple times.

We know you can find small dogs closer to home in New York. What we offer that a one-litter local breeder often cannot is a program built around this specific cross, with tested parents on both sides, a documented socialization protocol, and a written three-year health guarantee that covers genetic and congenital conditions. Our delivery van closes the distance for $350, and you are welcome to visit us in Ohio any time by appointment. Teddy Bear FAQs Of New York Families

Q: Will a Teddy Bear do all right in a New York City apartment?

A: Yes, this is one of the better apartment dogs we raise. They need 20 to 30 minutes of activity a day, which a walk around the block plus some indoor play covers easily. They are also quieter than most small breeds, so you are not going to be the neighbor with the barking dog, though they will announce someone at the door. Their size means stairs in a walk-up are no problem either.

Q: How do they handle upstate winters?

A: Their coat is medium length and plush, so cold walks are fine, but the coat picks up snow and road salt and mats faster in winter if you let it go. Brush after walks and rinse the paws when you come in. If you keep the coat in a shorter puppy cut through the winter months, upkeep drops a lot without losing the teddy bear look.

Q: Do they shed? My apartment building has an allergy-sensitive tenant.

A: Shedding is very low. Loose hair stays caught in the coat instead of falling out, which means less dander moving around a small space. No breed is genuinely hypoallergenic, and the word gets used loosely, so we will put it plainly: this cross works out for many people with mild to moderate allergies and does not always work for severe ones. Spending time with a specific puppy is the only way to know for certain.

Q: What does grooming cost and how often will I need it?

A: Plan on a professional groom every six to eight weeks, which in New York runs anywhere from around $70 upstate to well over $100 in the city depending on the shop. In between, brush several times a week with a slicker or pin brush, checking the ears, chest, and behind the legs where mats start. The hair around the eyes grows quickly and needs trimming, and a daily wipe keeps tear staining down.

Q: Can I visit before I reserve a puppy?

A: You are welcome to. We are open Monday through Saturday, 9 to 6, closed Sunday, and visits are by appointment. The drive is about five hours from Buffalo and closer to nine from the city. If that is too far to make twice, a FaceTime call before reserving works well and we do them regularly.

Q: Are Teddy Bears good with children?

A: They are a good match for kids of any age. They are compact but solidly built, not fragile the way some toy breeds are, and they have no meaningful prey drive and very little aggression in them. They are patient and steady with rough handling from little kids. The usual advice still applies, teach children to be gentle and supervise young ones around any dog.
