While standard Frenchies have short, smooth fur, the Fluffy carries a naturally occurring recessive gene called the Long Hair gene, or LH gene, which produces a softer, medium length coat that is most noticeable around the ears, chest, and neck. For a puppy to have this fluffy coat, both parents must carry the LH gene. If only one parent carries it, the puppy will have a standard short coat but may pass the gene on to future generations.
