While standard Frenchies have short, smooth fur, the Fluffy carries a naturally occurring recessive gene called the Long Hair gene, or LH gene, which produces a softer, medium length coat that is most noticeable around the ears, chest, and neck. For a puppy to have this fluffy coat, both parents must carry the LH gene. If only one parent carries it, the puppy will have a standard short coat but may pass the gene on to future generations. The French Bulldog breed originated in the mid 1800s from Toy Bulldogs brought to France by English lace workers and quickly became a favorite among Parisian society before making its way to America.
