They settle in just as easily in a Portland apartment as in an old farmhouse or a cottage down on the coast, and their easygoing, affectionate nature makes them wonderful company through a long winter indoors.
What Makes a Fluffy Frenchie Special
Ask what sets a Fluffy Frenchie apart from a standard French Bulldog, and the answer is short: the coat, and nothing else. A fluffy grows longer, softer fur, while keeping the whole Frenchie package, from the squishy flat face and big bat ears to the affectionate, clownish charm. The coat comes from a single gene that both parents have to carry, and because so few breeders test for it, real fluffies are hard to find. We test our dogs, so we know which puppies in a litter will be fluffy before they're born.
Getting Your Puppy Home to Maine
Maine is a long way northeast of our Ohio farm, but bringing your puppy home is straightforward, and we do it for New England families often. You have three ways to go about it.
Flight nanny — the option most Maine families pick. A nanny carries your puppy in the cabin the whole way, never in cargo, on a direct flight into Portland International Jetport (PWM). For families up north or Down East, Bangor International Airport (BGR) works well too. It's a short, easy trip for the puppy.
Ground delivery — a professional pet transport company can drive your puppy right to your door in a climate-controlled vehicle, from the coast to the north woods.
Farm pickup — you're always welcome to come meet the parents and take your puppy home yourself. You can drive in, or fly into one of three nearby airports and make a short trip out to the farm: Akron-Canton is about an hour and 20 minutes away, Columbus about an hour and a half, and Pittsburgh about two hours. Just set up a time with us first.
Maine's Short Summers and Long Winters
A Maine year is mostly winter with a good summer tucked inside it, and that shapes how you live with a Fluffy Frenchie.
The summer is short and lovely, and it's the easy season for this breed. Highs sit in the low 80s at the warmest, cooler along the coast, and heavy humidity is rare. A morning or evening walk, shade in the afternoon, and water within reach is all it takes, the same care any flat-faced dog wants, just seldom put to the test up here. It's the season for easy outings: a slow lap of Portland's Eastern Promenade, or a quiet walk by the water in Bar Harbor before the day warms up.
Winter is the long one, and Maine's is cold and snowy, more so the farther north and inland you go. A Fluffy Frenchie is not a cold-weather dog. That thick-looking coat is really just a single layer over a small, short-faced body, so the cold gets to them in a hurry. Keep winter walks brief, put a proper winter coat on before heading out, and check their paws when you come in, since ice balls up between the toes; some owners use dog booties on the worst days. When it's bitterly cold or the wind is howling off the water, a fast trip outside and straight back in is plenty. The indoor air goes dry once the woodstove and furnace are running, so a humidifier and a dab of paw balm keep skin and pads from cracking.
Spring and fall don't last long, but they bring the finest walking weather of the year, cool, crisp, and gentle on a short-nosed dog. Whatever the season, a Frenchie's favorite place is right next to you, indoors, wherever it's warm.
