A Fluffy Frenchie is a French Bulldog in every way but the coat. Same flat little face, same tall ears, same big-hearted, comical personality, only wrapped in longer, softer fur. That coat traces back to a single gene, and it takes both parents carrying it to produce a fluffy puppy. Hardly any breeders test for the gene, so a true fluffy is a rare thing to find. Raising a Frenchie in New Jersey
New Jersey gives your Frenchie four real seasons, so both summer and winter call for a bit of planning.
Summers are warm and humid, and the humidity is the part that matters for a flat-faced dog, since damp air makes it harder for them to cool themselves down. On the muggiest days, keep walks to the morning and evening and let the air conditioning do the rest. Down at the shore, in Toms River, Brick, and the beach towns, the ocean breeze takes a bit of the edge off both the summer heat and the winter cold.
Winter brings cold and a fair amount of snow, especially inland and up north. A short-coated dog like a Frenchie feels that, so keep a few habits:
- Put a warm sweater or coat on your Frenchie for cold-weather walks, and keep them short when it's snowy or biting out.
- Wipe the road salt off their paws when you come back in, before it irritates their pads.
- Run a humidifier if your indoor heat leaves the air dry, so their skin doesn't flake.
For a flat, easy walk with your pup, it's hard to beat the Jersey classics. Liberty State Park in Jersey City looks straight out at the Statue of Liberty, and much of the year you can stroll the boardwalk or the sand at Island Beach State Park down the shore.
