Summer is the easy season here. The sea breeze keeps most days in the low to mid-80s, cooler than a summer inland or down south, and a Frenchie handles that well. On the few hot, sticky stretches that do roll through, treat it the way you would anywhere: walk in the morning or evening, keep water close, and let the air conditioning do the work in the middle of the day. A flat-faced dog can't cool itself as easily as a long-nosed one, so shade and AC still matter, even in a mild summer.

Fall is the best walking weather of the year, and it's made for a dog like this. Cool, clear afternoons are perfect for an easy stroll along the Providence River Walk, out at Colt State Park in Bristol, or a slow lap of the Newport Cliff Walk with the ocean on one side.

Winter is the season to plan around. Rhode Island gets real cold and real snow, more of it up north around Woonsocket and the Blackstone Valley than down on the south coast, where the ocean holds things a few degrees milder. The part that surprises people is the wind. A raw, damp wind comes off the bay and the open water, and it makes a cold day feel colder and cuts right through a short coat. Keep winter walks shorter, put a warm sweater or coat on your Frenchie before you head out, and wipe the paws when you come back in, since the salt spread on sidewalks can dry and crack them. Indoors, the heat runs dry all winter, so a little added humidity is kind to their skin.

Spring comes in slow and wet as the ground thaws. Then, bit by bit, you're back to longer walks and open windows, and the whole gentle cycle starts over.
