Massachusetts is a state of walkable, close-packed neighborhoods, and that's a Fluffy Frenchie's kind of place. These are indoor dogs who like being wherever you are, whether that's a triple-decker in Somerville, a brownstone near the Common, or a house out in the MetroWest suburbs. A couple of short walks and a bit of company keep one perfectly happy, and they're just as content spending a slow summer week with you in a cottage on the Cape. Friendly and unbothered, they take city sidewalks and quiet side streets in stride.
What Makes a Fluffy Frenchie Special
Set a Fluffy Frenchie next to any other French Bulldog and the only thing you'd notice is the coat, longer and softer where the usual Frenchie is short. Past that, it's the same dog families fall for every time: the flat face, the big bat ears, and the affectionate, slightly goofy personality. That long coat comes from a single gene both parents have to carry, and since very few breeders test for it, a true fluffy is a rare find. We test our dogs, so we know which puppies in a litter will be fluffy before they're born.
Getting Your Puppy Home to Massachusetts
Massachusetts is a good distance northeast of our Ohio farm, but bringing your puppy home is straightforward, and we do it for New England families often. You have three ways to go about it.
Flight nanny — the option most Massachusetts families pick. A nanny carries your puppy in the cabin the whole way, never in cargo, on a direct flight into Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) in East Boston. It's a short, easy trip for the puppy.
Ground delivery — a professional pet transport company can drive your puppy right to your door in a climate-controlled vehicle, from the Boston suburbs out to the Berkshires or down to Cape Cod.
Farm pickup — you're always welcome to come meet the parents and take your puppy home yourself. You can drive in, or fly into one of three nearby airports and make a short trip out to the farm: Akron-Canton is about an hour and 20 minutes away, Columbus about an hour and a half, and Pittsburgh about two hours. Just set up a time with us first.
Raising a Frenchie Through a Massachusetts Winter
Most of what gets written about French Bulldogs and weather is about keeping them cool. In Massachusetts, it runs the other way. Summer here is comfortable. Winter is the season you plan around.
Massachusetts winters are long and snowy. Boston averages close to four feet of snow a year, with more inland around Worcester, and a single nor'easter can drop a foot or more in a day. A Fluffy Frenchie isn't built for that kind of cold. The coat looks warm, but it's a single layer on a small, flat-faced dog, and the chill reaches the skin quickly. A few simple habits keep your Frenchie comfortable through the worst of it:
- Put a warm, water-resistant coat on for walks, and keep them short when the wind is up or the temperature drops.
- Wipe or rinse the feet at the door. Whatever the city spreads to melt ice is hard on paw pads, and snow likes to clump in the fur between their toes.
- Head back inside at the first sign of shivering or a lifted paw.
- Keep a humidifier going indoors. Forced heat pulls the moisture out of the air, and that's rough on skin and coat.
The payoff for all that is a New England summer, which fits this breed well. Highs mostly stay in the low 80s, cooler near the water, and a Frenchie is happy with a morning or evening walk and shade in the middle of the day. An easy stroll along the Charles River Esplanade in Boston, or a quiet off-season walk on a Cape Cod beach, is right at their pace. Save the hottest, most humid afternoons for the air conditioning, the same as you would with any short-nosed dog.
